Migrate from Magento 1 to Magento 2 without Disrupting Trade

Your Magento 1 store moves to Magento 2 with its data, integrations, required features and SEO plan. The existing store continues trading while the new platform is built and tested for a controlled cutover.

Magento 2 is not an in-place upgrade for Magento 1. It is a different platform, so the storefront, extensions and bespoke code must be assessed and rebuilt using the current Magento 2 architecture.

Why replatform

Magento 1 is no longer a secure foundation for growth

Official support for Magento 1 ended in 2020. Without vendor security updates and with fewer actively maintained extensions, keeping the store operational increasingly depends on patches and workarounds.

Replatforming to Magento 2 creates a cleaner architecture and rebuilds only the features the business needs. It also improves performance, the mobile experience, the customer journey and day-to-day store operations.

You receive the Magento 2 delivery scope after an audit of the data, theme, modules, integrations and bespoke code. The audit identifies suitable off-the-shelf solutions and components to rebuild, forming the basis for your quote.

What needs to be migrated or rebuilt?

The migration covers distinct workstreams for data, the storefront, features and integrations. Each has its own scope and acceptance criteria covering the needs of customers, your team and connected systems.

Data migration

Your products, categories, attributes, prices, customers, addresses, orders and other agreed records move through defined data mappings. A verified backup protects the source before migration begins.

New frontend

Your Magento 2 storefront uses a new Hyvä Commerce implementation, as Magento 1 themes do not run on Magento 2. The new storefront can retain the brand’s visual direction or use the replatforming project as an opportunity for a full redesign.

Extensions and features

An inventory records your Magento 1 extensions and how each is used in practice. Required capabilities receive supported Magento 2 equivalents or bespoke extensions.

Integrations and bespoke code

Your ERP, PIM, CRM, OMS, payment and carrier integrations receive implementations compatible with the new APIs. The scope retains custom processes with a defined business purpose.

How does a Magento 1 to Magento 2 migration work?

Your source-platform audit defines the build and data mappings. Trial migrations use copies of production data, and final cutover follows UAT and data reconciliation.

  1. Magento 1 backup and auditYour data receives a verified backup. The audit records the Magento version, catalogue, extensions, theme, bespoke code, integrations, SEO and your team's operational workflows.
  2. Data and feature mappingYou receive the target data model, replacement-extension plan, storefront scope and acceptance criteria for every critical workflow.
  3. Magento 2 store buildYour Magento 2 configuration, storefront, extensions and integrations are ready in separate environments for repeated imports and testing.
  4. Trial migrationsTrial imports reconcile record counts and relationships against copies of the source data. Mapping issues are resolved before the final run.
  5. UAT and operational readinessYour team tests complete customer and operational journeys and becomes familiar with the new admin. The go-live checklist covers payments, delivery, integrations and SEO.
  6. Final synchronisation and cutoverThe final import and traffic switch follow the agreed cutover window. Critical workflows are validated, with store monitoring continuing after go-live.

How are your data, SEO and sales continuity protected?

Backups and migration rehearsals

Verified backups keep your source data protected. Repeated trial imports expose issues before the final migration reaches the live store.

SEO redirect map

You receive an old-to-new URL map and 301 redirects, with checks on metadata, indexation controls, canonical URLs and the XML sitemap.

Data completeness check

Reconciliation confirms product, customer and order counts and relationships between records. Sample checks cover data needed for trading and after-sales service.

Cutover and rollback plan

Go-live is scheduled away from peak trading periods. The cutover window, responsibilities and rollback scenario are documented before final synchronisation begins.

Common Magento 1 migration risks

Incomplete list of features

An overlooked extension or manual workflow may surface only during UAT. The audit therefore covers the codebase as well as how the e-commerce team actually operates the store.

Too few trial imports

A single import will not expose every data-quality issue. Repeated rehearsals stabilise the migration process and establish how long final synchronisation will take.

Missing redirects

Changing the URL structure without a complete 301 redirect map creates 404 errors and prevents search engines from transferring signals cleanly to the new store.

Poorly timed go-live

Launching immediately before a promotion or seasonal peak leaves little room to respond. Your cutover schedule reflects the trading calendar and your team's operational readiness.

Budget and timeline

What determines the cost of a Magento 1 migration?

The main cost drivers are data quality and volume, catalogue complexity, the number of storefronts and languages, the new storefront scope, integration count, and the functionality embedded in Magento 1 extensions and bespoke code.

After the audit, you receive the scope, delivery timeline and a fixed-price proposal. The document lists outstanding decisions separately, giving you a clear basis for approval.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about migrating Magento 1 to Magento 2

Can Magento 1 simply be upgraded to Magento 2?

No. Magento 2 has a different architecture, so it requires a new installation, data migration and a rebuilt storefront, extensions and integrations. It is a replatforming project, not a routine version upgrade.

Can the store keep its current look and feel?

The new storefront can retain the brand’s visual direction, but a Magento 1 theme cannot run on Magento 2. Rebuilding the frontend also improves mobile UX, performance and the customer journey.

What happens to Magento 1 extensions?

Required Magento 1 capabilities receive supported equivalents or bespoke Magento 2 extensions. The scope records how each feature is used, as Magento 1 extensions cannot run unchanged on Magento 2.

What data can be migrated?

The scope can include products, categories, attributes, prices, stock levels, customers, addresses, orders, content and sales configuration. Before delivery begins, the data map records the source structure and identifies records needing cleansing or additional mapping.

Will customers keep their accounts and passwords?

Yes. Magento 2 supports older password hashing methods used in Magento 1 and automatically updates the hash to the current standard after the first successful login. Customers therefore retain their accounts and existing passwords. The same mechanism applies to properly transferred administrator accounts.

Does the store need to be taken offline during migration?

Development and testing take place alongside the live Magento 1 store. A short maintenance window may be required for the final import and traffic cutover; its duration is established through migration rehearsals and synchronisation timing.

How do you protect SEO during replatforming?

Your migration includes a URL map, 301 redirects and transfer of important content and metadata. Checks cover canonical URLs, the sitemap and indexation before and after go-live, supporting continuity of organic search traffic.
