A Shopify to Magento 2 migration gives your business coordinated stores, shared commerce data and control over substantial bespoke pricing, ordering and backend workflows. Bespoke commerce can be the goal of migration for one store too. Shopify remains the first choice for one online-store operation built around native features, apps and integrations.
Compare development of your current Shopify store with migration through concrete benefits: automated orders, shared data and easier store management. The plan covers three-year ownership costs, data migration and ongoing technical care.
When is moving from Shopify to Magento justified?
Shopify supports B2C and B2B, integrations and international sales. Catalogue features, company permissions, payment terms and checkout capabilities follow the selected plan and Shopify B2B documentation. Shopify Markets supports several markets and languages within one store.
Magento 2 is the right direction for coordinated catalogue, customer and commercial management across stores, or for substantial bespoke commerce workflows, including within one store. Websites, stores and store views let you define shared data and separate settings for each sales channel.
Shopify also supports several stores with separate commerce data by default, a model suited to independent sales operations. Compare synchronisation and per-store costs with Magento’s coordinated management and maintenance.
Automated pricing, credit checks and reliable data exchange free the sales team from repetitive administration. Comparing Shopify’s native features, apps and integrations with Magento’s bespoke workflows defines the work needed to achieve these benefits.
How should you plan the data migration scope?
Products, collections, customers and order history are only part of the job. Decide which records are active, which need cleaning and which belong in a compliant archive. Shopify can export products, customers and orders, but its own backup and duplication guidance notes that orders cannot simply be imported through the Shopify admin. The migration plan therefore includes field mapping, API or specialist tooling, and reconciliation of the transferred records.
Prepare the catalogue by merging duplicates, updating descriptions, aligning option names and completing SKUs and image ownership. Magento’s attribute model reflects the organised product data. The plan identifies the source of product information in the PIM, ERP or store and assigns ownership for copy, attributes, prices and availability.
Customer accounts need particular care. Addresses, company relationships, segments and documented marketing permissions may be transferable, but passwords use platform-specific hashing and should not be treated like ordinary fields. Plan a secure activation or password-reset journey, explain it clearly and prepare customer service for edge cases. Transfer only personal data you still need and can lawfully retain under UK GDPR.
Order history is valuable to customer service, finance and analytics, but it does not all need to be imported as native Magento orders. A common approach is to import the period needed for day-to-day operations, provide a read-only archive where necessary and retain the complete source export in controlled storage. Agree retention periods and access controls before development begins.
Architecture before appearance
Start with the operating model: catalogue intake, pricing, inventory allocation, checkout, payment, fulfilment, returns, refunds and financial posting. Then design Magento and its integrations.
B2B buying journeys include company accounts, multiple buyers, approval roles, customer-specific catalogues, quick order by SKU, requisition lists, quotations and payment on account. The Magento 2 B2B platform overview explores these in more detail. Adobe Commerce with its B2B extension provides company purchasing features; Magento Open Source delivers the required scope through selected modules and bespoke development. B2C priorities include product discovery, bundles, loyalty, subscriptions and international selling. The architecture defines identity, tax, catalogue and pricing rules.
Define standard platform capabilities and the bespoke features that support your sales model. A focused, supportable set of components makes upgrades easier, while custom modules deliver the processes that create value. Include Hyvä for Magento 2 in the architecture plan for a leaner frontend. Each integration has a business owner, a data contract, monitoring and an agreed recovery procedure.
A migration plan that protects sales
A controlled project moves through discovery, data mapping, integration design, build, trial imports, acceptance testing and cutover rehearsal. Test more than add-to-basket: customer-specific prices, VAT, promotions, stock, payment, delivery, emails, refunds, exports and ERP posting. For B2B, include buyer permissions, purchase-order references, credit limits and approval thresholds.
A practical rehearsal
Take a representative set of 500 products, including simple items, products with variants, bundles and awkward legacy records. Import them into staging, reconcile counts and totals, and have merchandising staff review attributes, images, URLs and search results. Then migrate a sample of customers and orders and ask customer service to handle a return and a repeat purchase. This exposes mapping errors before they affect the full dataset.
Run at least one timed cutover rehearsal. Record how long the final Shopify exports or API delta take, when content editing freezes, how recent orders are reconciled and what would trigger rollback. On launch day, named owners should verify checkout, payment capture, tax, stock deduction, ERP order creation and transactional email before marketing traffic is released.
Protect organic visibility and UK customer journeys
Build a redirect map for every valuable product, collection and editorial URL. Preserve intent rather than forcing all old pages to the homepage. Carry over canonical decisions, metadata and structured data where they remain valid, then monitor crawl errors and indexing after launch.
A UK storefront must also be tested against local expectations and rules. Consumer journeys should state total prices and mandatory charges clearly; the CMA’s current price-transparency guidance is especially relevant to product, basket and checkout design. Delivery information and cancellation rights should be available before purchase, with GOV.UK explaining the normal 14-day cancellation period for distance sales. Validate GBP rounding, VAT rates, UK addresses, preferred delivery services and payment methods with realistic cases.
Budget and return on investment
Cost is driven by process complexity, integration count, data preparation and frontend scope. A standard catalogue and a distributor with contract prices, multiple warehouses and a customer portal require different delivery plans. Discovery provides the basis for a fixed-price proposal with defined deliverables, acceptance criteria and team responsibilities.
Look beyond the first month’s order count when measuring return on investment. Track conversion, revenue per session, order-processing cost, sales-team time, fulfilment errors, integration failure rates and the recurring cost of apps and support. A disciplined programme of conversion rate optimisation will help separate genuine improvements from normal trading fluctuations. In B2B, moving repeat orders to dependable self-service can be worth far more than a superficial increase in traffic.
A list of workflows to automate and data to share gives you a clear basis for comparing Shopify development with migration to Magento.
