Over 5,000 Products
A large catalogue means more attributes, variants, prices, feeds and mass operations. It is worth assessing the speed of administration, search engine and synchronisation with PIM or ERP.
I analyse the code, database, API, exports and integrations of the current store. I transfer the catalogue, customers, orders, content and SEO, and recreate the necessary business functions in the structured Magento 2 architecture.
A custom-written platform can serve your company's needs well for years. Migration becomes relevant when a lack of documentation, dependence on a single vendor, the cost of upgrades, or the difficulty of developing integrations start to create risk to sales.
The decision to change
The most important question is not the age of the technology, but the overall cost and risk of maintaining it. I look at where the business rules knowledge is, how quickly security updates can be deployed, who understands the data model, and how much each major change costs.
A bespoke-platform migration involves far more than copying a database. It is a replatforming project: I audit the data, features, integrations and admin workflows, then map each one to Magento core, a module, an integration or a new bespoke component.
The values below are not hard technical limits. These are actionable signals that the cost of restrictions, manual work or fees may justify an analysis of moving to Magento 2.
A large catalogue means more attributes, variants, prices, feeds and mass operations. It is worth assessing the speed of administration, search engine and synchronisation with PIM or ERP.
With such volume, checkout stability, service automation and integration reliability have a direct impact on operational costs and customer experience.
At this scale, the cost of downtime, throttling, and service-based fees begins to justify investing in a platform tailored to your processes and growth plans.
Each proprietary system has a different story. The issues below are audit signals, not assumptions made without checking the code, data and how the team works.
The meaning of fields, statuses, price exceptions and automation is sometimes only written in code or the knowledge of a few people. Each change then requires a costly reconstruction of the system's intentions.
When only one person can implement changes safely, leave, turnover, or lack of availability become an operational risk. It is also more difficult to independently assess the quality and cost of development.
An outdated framework, libraries and infrastructure can block security patches, third-party compatibility and the features customers expect.
Connections to ERP, PIM, WMS, CRM, OMS and marketplaces often arise at different times. The lack of queues, monitoring, retrying and a clear source of data increases the number of manual interventions.
Magento does not remove the need for development and maintenance. However, it replaces the self-maintained commercial core with a developed platform that can be expanded around the processes that constitute the company's real advantage.
The catalogue, prices, promotions, basket, orders, indexing, cache and admin panel create a common system. Growing your business doesn't require maintaining every standard commercial function from scratch.
Attributes, variants, sets, customer groups, pricing rules, multiple stores and markets, and B2C and B2B processes can be developed on a consistent basis.
Integrations can use standard interfaces, bulk operations, and queues. This makes it easier to portion data, handle errors, and monitor exchanges with company systems.
Open code allows you to maintain your own functions, change your technological partner and use specialists who know the platform, instead of developing competencies available only for one proprietary system.
Migration covers data, but also functions, integrations and the way the team works. Each area receives a mapping and completeness check criteria.
I map identifiers and relationships of products, variants, categories, attributes, media, prices, states, language versions, information pages and custom fields.
I transfer accounts, addresses, consents, orders, items, statuses, payments, deliveries and data needed by customer service. I confirm the scope after analysing the source.
I classify each unusual function as necessary to recreate, replaceable with the Magento standard, unnecessary or requiring a process change. This also includes automation and back-office tools.
I build integrations with ERP, PIM, WMS, CRM, OMS, payments and logistics. I implement the frontend with the Hyvä Commerce package, and SEO migration is secured with an URL map, 301 redirects, canonicals, a sitemap and indexation checks.
No off-the-shelf migration tool understands a bespoke platform’s schema, exceptions and business meaning. I build a repeatable ETL pipeline: I extract data from the database, API or exports, transform it into the target model and load it into Magento while preserving record relationships.
Each attempt generates an error report and inspection results. I compare the number of records, totals, statuses, relationships and data samples so that the import can be corrected and repeated. Before the start, I measure its time, and in the switchover window I download the final increase in orders, customers and catalogue changes.
The new Magento 2 store runs alongside the existing platform. I perform multiple trial migrations and schedule cutover only after testing and data reconciliation.
Budget and schedule
The greatest impact is on data quality, the number of variants and language versions, order history, the scope of the new frontend, integrations, B2B processes and functions that cannot be replaced with off-the-shelf modules.
After the audit, I prepare the scope of Magento 2 store development, schedule and pricing based on a fixed price. I describe elements that require decisions or additional data separately so that the budget is not based on hidden assumptions.
Technology partner
I focus on the commercial outcomes that matter to clients. I build fast, conversion-focused online stores and B2B platforms that automate workflows and make sales teams more efficient.
I combine seven years of experience in e-commerce with technological solutions supporting sales. After launch, I continue to help develop the platform and make strategic decisions.
Project security
The Adobe Commerce Frontend Expert certificate confirms the competences needed to properly implement Magento 2. This makes the choice of partner safer.
I have delivered Magento 2 integrations with ERP platforms such as Microsoft Dynamics 365, NetSuite and SAP Business One, PIM platforms including Akeneo, and order management systems such as Linnworks and Brightpearl. This reduces the risk in one of the most complex parts of an e-commerce project.
This is a fixed-price engagement. A thorough analysis defines acceptance criteria, architecture and scope. As a result, the project can be priced in detail and the final cost is not a surprise.
I release working features to the test environment throughout the project. Your project lead can review them as they become available, keeping you in control of the delivery direction.

FAQ
Often yes. The problem does not have to be the performance of the application itself, but the cost of maintenance, knowledge concentration, security, time to implement changes and integration risk. Migration is justified by the cumulative impact of these factors on sales and company development, not a single technical limit.
I can transfer data that can be reliably read and interpreted from the database, API or exports: products, variants, categories, attributes, media, prices, states, customers, addresses, consents, orders, statuses, content and custom fields. A trial extraction confirms quality and completeness before pricing.
It depends on the algorithm and how the data is stored in the current system. If the format can be safely handled, I implement a compliant staging mechanism and a hash update after the first login. Otherwise, I transfer accounts and history and clients set a new password. Public passwords are not copied. I recreate administrator accounts separately with minimal privileges and up-to-date security.
Construction and testing take place next to the operating store. A short service window may be needed for final integration synchronisation and switchover. I determine its length after trial imports.
I compare old and new addresses, prepare 301 redirects, transfer important content and metadata, and check canonicals, sitemap, analytics and indexation errors after launch. This does not guarantee immutable positions, but reduces the technical risk of losing traffic.
Magento requires professional hosting, updates and technical support, so it may not be justified for a small or standard store. At larger scale, the advantage is control over code, processes and costs that do not have to increase automatically with the number of applications, API calls or orders.
The initial budget range for migrating from a bespoke platform to Magento 2 is £12,000–£14,000 excluding VAT. The timescale depends on data quality, the number of integrations, the scope of features and the new frontend. After the audit, I prepare a schedule and a fixed price based on clearly defined acceptance criteria.
