How to Increase Your Ecommerce Conversion Rate

How to Increase Your Ecommerce Conversion Rate

A practical, evidence-led guide to improving ecommerce conversion through faster pages, clearer product information, better search and a smoother checkout.

Many buying journeys fall at the final hurdle: a mobile page stalls, product variants are unclear, delivery costs appear too late or a form asks for information the customer does not understand. The right way to increase your ecommerce conversion rate is to diagnose the entire journey, not change yet another homepage banner.

Conversion reflects the combined effect of the proposition, trust, usability, speed, product data, payments and fulfilment. Decisions should be based on evidence and commercial priorities, not copied lists of “best practices”.

Start with a useful diagnosis

Segment the funnel by device, channel, new/returning customer, category and market. The blended conversion rate can hide a mobile variant-selection problem or a paid-search landing page with the wrong intent.

Combine numbers with observation: on-site search, usability sessions, support contacts, returns reasons and warehouse exceptions. If customers repeatedly ask whether an item will fit or when it will arrive, put reliable information at the decision point rather than adding another generic FAQ.

For B2B, include assisted and offline behaviour. A buyer may need account pricing, stock by branch, order by SKU or previous-order reordering. If every routine transaction requires a sales call, the online conversion rate tells only part of the story and highlights a gap in self-service.

Improve performance where customers actually buy

Measure popular category, search, product, basket and checkout pages using field data. Google’s good Core Web Vitals targets are LCP within 2.5 seconds, INP under 200 milliseconds and CLS under 0.1 at the 75th percentile.

Common causes include oversized images, uncontrolled marketing tags, heavy themes, slow APIs and ageing extensions. Hyvä development for Magento 2 can simplify the frontend, but it cannot correct weak search, incomplete ERP data or an unreliable pricing service.

Make product decisions easier

A product page should answer: is this right for me, what is the total price, when will it arrive and what happens if I return it? On mobile, those answers must be prominent and readable.

Use sector-specific information. Automotive needs fitment; fashion needs credible sizing; B2B needs manufacturer codes, pack sizes, price breaks and logistics data. Show genuine availability and avoid fabricated scarcity.

Remove checkout friction

Measure each step and error. Exit after delivery selection, payment failure and address validation have different causes. Support guest checkout where appropriate, preserve entered data, show useful field errors and present trusted payment and delivery choices.

For UK consumers, show the total price and unavoidable charges clearly. Current CMA guidance specifically addresses VAT, mandatory delivery or booking fees and drip pricing. Delivery terms and cancellation information should also be available before purchase under distance-selling rules.

Trade checkout may instead require payment on account, purchase-order references, an approval workflow or an authorised buyer acting for a company. Do not force those processes into a consumer checkout. Our guide to Magento 2 B2B implementation covers these account journeys in more detail.

Search and filters should help buyers reach the right product

Buyers often enter a precise phrase or SKU. Search should handle the catalogue’s real language, useful synonyms and common misspellings. Analyse zero-result searches and exits, not only search volume.

Filters should reflect category decisions and remain usable on mobile. Clean PIM or ERP attributes are a commercial asset. An attribute that exists internally but is missing or inconsistent online cannot help a customer choose. If product and stock data are unreliable, address the underlying Magento ERP integration rather than trying to disguise the problem in the interface.

Design for accessibility

Improving accessibility often removes conversion friction for everyone. Follow WCAG 2.2 and test keyboard operation, focus visibility, target sizes, zoom, labels, error recovery, redundant entry and authentication. Include payment widgets and consent controls, not just the theme.

Measure without breaking UK privacy rules

Session replay, experimentation and advertising technology may require consent. The ICO’s current guidance covers cookies, pixels and other storage/access technologies. The site must remain fully usable when a visitor declines consent, and non-essential tags should not run before the required choice.

Do not let privacy controls corrupt the funnel. Test consent-state persistence, analytics triggers and purchase deduplication. Document which decisions can be made from consented data and where uncertainty remains.

Optimise for profit, not a vanity rate

A discount can raise conversion while reducing margin and training customers to wait. Track revenue per session, average order value, gross margin after discount, return rate, customer acquisition cost and repeat purchase alongside conversion.

A practical prioritisation example

Suppose mobile product-to-basket is healthy but checkout completion is 18% lower than desktop. Session evidence shows postcode lookup repeatedly clears flat numbers, while support logs contain delivery-address complaints. Fix and test that defect before redesigning product photography. Define success as fewer validation errors and more completed orders, with no increase in failed deliveries.

Another store has many zero-result searches for manufacturer part numbers containing hyphens. Normalising those queries and returning compatible products may outperform a broad navigation redesign because it helps visitors who already intend to buy.

Use an evidence-led cycle

Select the highest-value problem, state a hypothesis and guardrails, implement safely and measure over an appropriate period. A/B testing needs enough traffic and sound analytics. Smaller stores may get more value from usability research and fixing an obvious defect than from an underpowered experiment.

Conversion improves when the right customer can make a confident decision with less effort. Find one measurable point where orders are being lost, remove the cause and verify the commercial result before moving to the next idea.
